The purpose of the research is to investigate the effect of motor activity on the functional state of the cardiorespiratory system of first–year students.

Methods and organization of research. The survey was attended by students of the Institute of Natural Science Education, Physical Culture and Life Safety of the Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University (VGSPU), who were divided into 2 observation groups of 24 people each: I – students with a normal level of motor activity (training profile «Biology», «Geography»); II – students with an increased level of motor activity (training profile «Physical culture», «Life safety»). The study was conducted in two stages: in October and in March. The following parameters were assessed: heart rate, blood pressure level, vital capacity of the lungs, breath holding time during inhalation, systolic and minute blood volume, the value of adaptive potential and the Skibinski index.

The research results and their discussion. Students with high motor activity showed an increase in the functional capabilities of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It has been established that regular motor activity, physical education and sports contribute to an increase in the number of students with good and excellent reserves of functioning of the cardiorespiratory system in terms of the Skibinski index, which indicates positive adaptive changes in their cardiorespiratory system.

Conclusion. To maintain and improve health, students with a normal level of physical activity are recommended to increase the amount of physical activity by attending sports sections at VGSPU.
