The research purpose: to study motivations for physical education and sports at the university and to substantiate the effectiveness of sportization in developing students’ motivation for physical education and sports activities.
Methods and organization of the research. The study was conducted in the form of a sociological survey, in which 1st-3rd year students of the Buryat State University named after D. Banzarov studying in general physical training groups and in sports specialization groups in various sports (840 people) participated.
Results and discussion. The survey results showed that students involved in any chosen sport show a greater motivation to engage in physical education and sports, since they have a stable self-awareness in relation to health and a desire to achieve success in their chosen sport in accordance with their individual capabilities.
Students who study in general physical training groups do not show proper interest in physical education and sports, and therefore do not have the necessary motivation.
Conclusion. The study established the effectiveness of sportization in shaping students’ motivation for physical education and sports activities and determined the need for proper work of teachers in sports orientation of students in general physical training groups at the university.
