Annotation:

The purpose of the study is to substantiate the psychological criteria for the selection of athletes in the system of long-term sports training.

Materials and methods of research. An analysis of special literature on the theory and methods of sports, sports psychology and psychodiagnostics was carried out. The psychological criteria for selection in various sports proposed by the authors were revealed. It is assumed that at a particular stage of sports selection, the criteria for selecting athletes corresponding to the stage will be appropriate. The research methods were: analysis of specialized literature, theoretical research, systematic approach, generalization.

Research results. The state of the problem of psychological selection criteria in sports was revealed. Based on this, psychological selection criteria at each stage of training were determined, and the expected results were substantiated. The choice of specific psychological selection criteria in sport is based on the tasks solved at a particular stage of athletes’ training. At the initial training stage, the feasibility of a sport is determined, taking into account the compliance of the child’s physical qualities with the requirements of this sport. At the training stage, innate functional characteristics of sensorimotor, inclinations, and abilities are revealed. It is considered advisable to study the typological features of the nervous system. At the stage of sports improvement, the increase in sports results and factors determining it are revealed. At the stage of higher sportsmanship, the following are revealed: the ability for psychoregulation, the content of pre-competitive mental activity, emotional intelligence, the degree of tolerance of mental load, the stability of the athlete's performance in competitions.

Conclusion. The study of specialized literature in the context of sports selection, the identification of psychological qualities that determine success in sports activity, allowed us to substantiate the conceptual model for the introduction of psychological criteria for selection in the system of long-term training of athletes.
