The article presents the results of a study of the history of the development of shot put as a type of athletics.

The research purpose: to conduct a systematic analysis of the evolution of world records in men's shot put and to identify the factors determining the development of this type of athletics.

Methods and organization of the research: analysis of scientific and methodological literature, competition reports, dynamics of world records in men's shot put.

Research results. The growth of world records in the shot put among men is subject to a strict pattern - the improvement in results occurs exponentially. The identified periods of growth in world records in the men's shot put reflect the dominant training methodology and the corresponding material and technical base of a certain stage of development of society. Six periods in the evolution of shot put as a type of athletics have been identified, lasting from 1 year to 40 years, covering periods of time with different dynamics of growth of world records. In each period, a different intensity of growth in record results was revealed, depending on the improvement of the sports training system (development of motor abilities, evolution of the shot put technique), socio-political conditions and a number of other factors. In some periods, stages are noted that are characterized by qualitative changes in indicators, for example, an abrupt or gradual increase in records or their stabilization.

Conclusion. Based on the analysis of the growth curve of world records in the shot put, it becomes possible to predict records in the future. It is assumed that further growth of records is largely possible through the search for talents with a unique combination of morphofunctional characteristics and physical abilities.
