The article presents the results of a content analysis of Russian doctoral dissertations in the field of physical culture and sports (PCS) from 1952 to 2019, narrowing the thematic differentiation from general problems to problems of sports, and further to problems of combat sports and specifically wrestling.

Research purpose: to identify thematic trends in Russian doctoral dissertation research in the field of PCS in the context of the scientific development of problems related to the training of athletes specializing in national wrestling styles.

Research design and methods. The study was conducted in 2023-2025. Content analysis was used as the primary method. The source base was formed using electronic catalogs (RSCI, eLibrary, HAC database) and includes 816 doctoral dissertations on PCS problems. Thematic subsamples were identified within the dataset: "sport" (n=381), "combat sports" (n=72), and "wrestling" (n=47).

Results and discussion. The dynamics of dissertation defenses passed through stages of growth, a peak (1996–2005), and decline. All 47 doctoral dissertations on wrestling problems are devoted exclusively to Olympic (freestyle, Greco-Roman) and globally widespread (judo, sambo) styles. No studies were found dedicated to a comprehensive examination of training problems in the national wrestling styles of the peoples of Russia (hapsagai, kuresh, chidaoba, etc.).

Conclusion. National wrestling styles remain poorly studied, and issues of their development are not among the priorities of sports science. At the same time, they are widespread in certain territories of the country, carry the function of preserving the ethno-cultural heritage of indigenous peoples, and also contain an arsenal of unique technical methods of conducting a bout, which, under conditions of real opposition from an opponent, can ensure victory. In this regard, conducting comprehensive research aimed at developing a concept and/or system of sports training for national types of combat sports is relevant and promising.
