The purpose of the study: to study the level and structure of motivation for physical education among pupils aged 8-10 at a boarding school in Accra (Republic of Ghana) at the beginning of the school year.

Methods and organization of research. Questionnaires and interviews were used. The study involved 186 students (85 boys and 101 girls) aged 8-10 years - pupils of the boarding school "Happy Kids School" in Accra. 12 physical education teachers of this organization were also interviewed.

The results of the study and their discussion. An analysis of the survey data showed that the majority of students aged 8-10 expressed a desire to improve their physical fitness (62-81%). The leading motives for physical exercise in the studied children were: improving health (48-67%) and improving appearance (33-45%). Physical education teachers identified the formation of personal physical culture and the improvement of physical fitness of schoolchildren as priority tasks of physical education.

Conclusion. Positive age-related dynamics were found in motivation for physical education among 9- to 10-year-old children compared to 8-year-old children. A significant proportion of students reported improved well-being after physical education classes. However, a relatively high percentage of 8-year-old students were "indifferent" to physical education, highlighting the need for differentiated and student-centered approaches to organizing physical education in boarding schools.
