The article studies the legislative requirements for theoretical training of athletes. The paper considers the outline of the contents of the theoretical material of the ski jumpers training programs. The article presents recommendations for planning the theoretical training of ski jumpers. The study revealed that the implementation of this type of training is directly related to the educational work of the coach, psychological, technical and tactical training, instructing and judging practice. When preparing the theoretical material, it is necessary to consider the regulations of federal state educational standards, federal standards of sports training, the «Athlete» professional standard, as well as the current knowledge level of the athlete, training forms, methods and principles. It is recommended to divide the content of the theoretical section of sport training programs into two interlinked blocks: basic – for compulsory studying (based on the content of general education programs) and advanced (corresponding to the requirements of the professional activity of an athlete in favored sport). At the same time, it is desirable to deliver special theoretical knowledge in accordance with the professional functions of the athlete considering the annual cycle period.
