The article studies the relevance and the necessity of forming professional competence of foreign language teachers in the sport university. It is required by modern conditions, increased requirements for the learning process of foreign languages and educational standards. The aim of the research – to offer effective ways of dealing with modern challenges of forming the professional competence of a foreign language teacher in the sport university. The objectives of the research: 1. To analyze psychological, pedagogical, linguistic and methodological literature focused on the issue of forming professional competence of teachers. 2. To consider the content and structure of the professional competence of a foreign language teacher. 3. To analyze the current problems of forming the professional competence of a teacher. The essence of the “professional competence of a foreign language teacher” concept is revealed as a complex of linguocultural, sociolinguistic, strategic and discursive knowledge, skills and abilities allowing the teacher of a foreign language to cooperate effectively with a student in specific socially determined professional situations. In order to achieve the set goals and objectives we used the complex methodology that included theoretical methods (analysis of psychological, pedagogical and methodological literature on the research problem, the study of methodological documentation of Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism), and empirical methods (survey of teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics, observation, visiting workshops and master classes, conversations with teachers and students). The problem of forming professional competence of a teacher is examined from different points of view. The authors of this article share a point of view that defines professional competence as a combination of two components: a professional and technological component and a component that includes the key competencies of a specialist. The article analyzes the problems of modern language education in details: the problem of foreign language textbooks, the problem of the educational standard, the problem of qualification and professional adequacy of a foreign language teacher, the problem of inconsistency and ambiguity of various ideas and impressions of modern education. Different ways of their solutions are suggested: the creation of a flexible and mobile system of professional development and the search for new, more effective forms of interaction between educational institutions, methodical services, and professional associations of teachers on the goal-directed continuous pedagogical education of foreign language teachers.
