The research purpose – to analyze the menstrual function in adolescent girls and young women involved in professional sports based on a review of the current literature.
Research methods. A systematic literature search was conducted in several databases, including PubMed, Cyberleninka, and Google Scholar, using the following keywords: physical activity, sport, menstrual cycle, hypothalamic dysfunction, and reproductive health.
Research results and discussion. Excessive or improperly balanced physical activity, especially in professional sports, can cause reproductive dysfunction, in particular, menstrual cycle disorders. This review examines the influence, underlying causes, and pathophysiological mechanisms of menstrual dysfunction development in girls and young women engaged in intense physical training and professional sports.
Conclusion. Sports with different levels of risk of menstrual disorders, as well as the health consequences of prolonged amenorrhea, including decreased bone mineral density and the risk of long-term reproductive impairment, are analyzed. Recommendations for preserving menstrual function and reproductive health in female athletes involved in professional sports are provided.
