The research purpose – is to assess the level of physical working capacity using maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max), as well as to evaluate the features of reaching the anaerobic threshold (AT), in low and highly qualified representatives of various sports (females and males).

Methods and organization of the research. The following tests were held in laboratory conditions - a direct method for determining VO2max (i) and VO2max according to the Astrand nomogram (ii) – to assess the level of physical working capacity of low and highly qualified representatives of various sports (females and males).

Results and their discussion. The direct method for determining VO2max allows to get the statistically more homogeneous indicators in comparison with indirect ones (by using Astrand nomogram). High sports qualifications are accompanied by a significant increase in physical working capacity level in comparison with less
experienced sports representatives. High-quality athletes, when achieving the AТ, demonstrate a tendency to a more individualized strategy in the cardio respiratory system activity unlike the beginners.

Conclusion. The article analyses the results of the use of two types of tests to assess the physical working capacity in athletes of low and high qualifications. The analysis of VO2max and AT values, as well as the heart rate data  at reaching AT-indicator, was performed. The results identify the main changes in the physical working capacity and some peculiarities of the athletes' bodies functioning in accordance with the increasing level of sport professionalism.
